ART APPRECIATION For analysis of paintings by Realist artists like Manet, see: How to Appreciate Paintings.. Background. Edouard Manet has long been seen as a pioneer of modern art and a major contributor to the modernizing of French painting during the period 1863-83. The painting’s juxtaposition of fully dressed men and a nude woman was controversial, as was its abbreviated, sketch-like handling, an innovation that distinguished Manet from Courbet. Indeed, Manet’s most controversial work—Olympia—was probably the first true work of modern art. Edouard Manet was known for his controversial figure with landscape paintings, and while he never pursued the controversy, this one was particularly troublesome. It was a picture that scandalised 1860s Paris and changed the course of art history. In Olympia, Monet turned to the female nude, as so many painters had done before. At the same time, this composition reveals Manet’s study of the old Renaissance masters. Modern scholars believe Manet's technique further inflamed the controversy surrounding Olympia. Edouard Manet Olympia was defined by the look that model Victorine Meurent gave off in the painting, along with the setting that she was in.

Manet’s Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe (1863), known in English as The Luncheon on the Grass, was first shown in this historic exhibition. The artwork not only stirred controversy, it also helped inaugurate a new kind of painting. One work cited by scholars as an important precedent for Édouard Manet is widely known as one of the key artists to usher in the Impressionist movement, in which short, choppy strokes are blended to create beautiful images from afar, but lose all definition up close. Born into an upper-class household with strong political connections, Manet rejected the future originally envisioned for him, and became engrossed in the world of painting. The outrage surrounding the painting may not have been a surprise given the nature of some of Manet’s earlier work, but it did go a long way in truthfully depicting Parisian life. 1.
