From 2-6 December 2019, International Criminal Court (ICC) States Parties convened in The Hague for the 18th annual session of the Assembly of States Parties (ASP) to the Rome Statute. If States Parties want a Court which is able to meet the challenges of not just today but tomorrow as well, we must elect the best possible judges and Prosecutor at next year’s Assembly. Africa has been at the forefront of contemporary global efforts towards ensuring greater accountability for international crimes. Out of them 33 are African States , 19 are Asia-Pacific States , 18 are from Eastern Europe , 28 are from Latin American and Caribbean States , and 25 are from Western European and other States . Each year between 2016 and 2021, the Canadian Partnership for International Justice (CPIJ) sets up and funds a delegation of Canadian students, headed by academics and practitioners from various academic institutions and NGOs, to attend the Assembly of States Parties (ASP) to the International Criminal Court (ICC). As States parties and concerned non-party States work to fulfill the stocktaking commitments undertaken in Kampala--whether in discharging obligations to cooperate with the Court or through efforts to support positive complementarity—we must ensure that we do so in a manner that honors the righteous demand for justice by those against whom atrocities have been perpetrated. Serving as the governing body of the Court, the ASP meets in full plenary once a year to discuss and decide upon matters key to the future functioning of the ICC.
